Installation & first-time setup

Follow these steps in order to install Ledger Live and initialize or connect your Ledger hardware device. This flow minimizes risk and ensures the device remains the source of truth for signing.

1. Download only from ledger.com/start.

Type the URL directly or use a verified bookmark. Do not rely on third-party links or search ads that may impersonate the official site.

2. Verify the installer.

If Ledger publishes checksums or signatures, verify them locally using OS tools (shasum, certutil) or GPG. Mismatched fingerprints mean the file is potentially tampered — do not run it.

3. Install and run Ledger Live.

Run the installer for your OS, then open Ledger Live. Follow the onboarding: set up a new device or connect an existing one. For Nano X Bluetooth pairing, use the official mobile app flow.

4. Initialize device & secure recovery seed.

Create a PIN, write down your 24-word recovery phrase on the provided card (or metal backup), and store it offline in at least two geographically separated secure locations.

Verifying installers & checksums

Verifying an installer is an essential anti-tampering step. Ledger may publish SHA256 fingerprints or digital signatures. Use your operating system tools to compute the local hash and compare it with the value listed on ledger.com/start. If a signature is provided, use GnuPG to verify the authenticity against the vendor's public key. If verification fails, delete the file and re-download only from the official source.

Quick commands

macOS / Linux: shasum -a 256 filename
Windows (PowerShell): Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 filename

Security best practices

Ledger hardware wallets secure your private keys by keeping them inside the device’s secure element. To get the full protection, pair the device with Ledger Live and follow these practices:

  • Always verify actions on the device screen before approving.
  • Never enter your recovery phrase into a computer or phone — it must be offline.
  • Use a strong, memorable PIN and consider passphrases only if you understand the risks.
  • Keep device firmware and Ledger Live updated, but read release notes before applying firmware changes.
  • Prefer the desktop app for firmware updates and critical management tasks; mobile is convenient for monitoring and smaller actions.
